21 Is Such A Good Number

Props to Guano Apes for the title lyric.

Although my birthday is not until December, my Nana has been talking about giving me my 21st birthday present to me early; the same time she gives my sister her 19th birthday present. After her recent trip to hospital, she is convinced that she won’t live to see my 21st birthday. Of course, we’re all doing her best to convince her otherwise, but I’m still getting my $1000 a few months early.

Because of this, I’ve started thinking about my birthday and all the things that are otherwise attached to turning 21. For me, birthdays have never been a big deal. I stopped having parties after about my sixth birthday (or perhaps seventh) because I had no friends to invite. I had one, I think, when I turned 16, and that was me and five others going bowling. No music, no dancing, no cake.

Although when I went away to university I made friends, my birthday always fell around that time when we were all at home after exams. So no big parties for me (unless you include the basic “floor gets together and eats a cake” thing we did for each person).

I sort of feel apprehensive about turning 21 - I’ve never felt comfortable with being 20, as I don’t feel I am mature enough for that label. Sometimes when I’m writing about myself I find that I have listed my age as 17, which is getting more and more inaccurate by the day (except that I still look 16). Should I be living in my own flat at 21? Should I know even the basics on how to drive a car? Should I have gone on dates/been kissed?

So… how should I celebrate my 21st birthday? What does turning 21 mean to you? Your thoughts on yaoi aging?

I’m 21 next August. I’m planning to spend the weekend at a theme park (Alton Towers) with my two BFF’s.

Either that or I hijack my sister’s 18th party so I look like I have more friends!

Bah, I wish I could do something like that. Sis hates me, and we have no theme parks nearby. :(

    21 is my favourite number!

I don’t really celebrate my birthday, but it doesn’t stop my friends from buying me a nice cake :D

Well, I turned 19 on Easter. And I was away from home, AND away from my temporary home at the time. I was on holiday with a few room mates, and I forgot it was my birthday for 2 hours after I woke up. Then we went to a HUGE Easter dinner, and I forgot it was my birthday again, until my friend’s entire family, 2 tables equalling about 50 people, sang Happy Birthday to me, in French! It was surprising! Ha ha. Still, even though I’m 19, I look 16 as well, and still feel quite young…

I’ll be 21 next year and I want to go dancing. Around here, all the clubs have that restriction of 21 years. And it really is no good at all.

Otherwise, I’d like to go skydiving but that’s not in the budget.

Have a virtual party. Pick a time, nominate a timezone, and all of us, wherever we are, can eat cake and sing happy birthday into the air. Get someone to take a photo of us doing so (bonus marks if we wear party hats for you, and get a clock in the background to prove the time), and post all the photos.

Heck, I just want to eat cake, and have an excuse to do so!

That’s not a bad idea. When are you and Claire gonna be up here? We can do a triple so-not-the-right-day birthday thing up here, or something.
