Warning! Warning!

I have posted before about my venturing into the world of PHP, and have made a few references to the really really basic CMS that I am writing as a part of my coursework. FYI, I am not dumping Wordpress for this thing - I am going to hand it over to my mother and our Guiding District, so that when they get I make them a website, they can create/edit/delete pages without having to run to me all the time.

… Well, they’ll still be running to me all the time, but at least I don’t have to teach them FTP. It took a long time to instruct my mother in some of the basic PS functions: “Open in Photoshop. Crop. Image resize. Save for web. Save.” - repeat a few dozen times, and followed by the occassional call of “Catherine!” from the room next to my own.

I’m currently working on the messages for each page, and what instructions I need for each one. When I cane to my delete page, I hit a bit of a snag. I realised that, not matter how many warning messages I put up, not matter how many “Are you sure you want to delete this page?” things that pop-up, my mother is still going to be clicking away. As will possibly anyone else who uses this thing.

So, how best can I phrase a warning message on the start of the page? Here is the one I just put in now:

This is the page where you can delete pages which are no longer for your website. Warning: Once you delete a page, you CANNOT retrieve it, so please make sure that you are certain about deleting a page before you do so.

Apart from a giant “THIS MEANS YOU, MUM!“, what can I add? How can I rephrase it? Basically, any ideas at all?

    Make them confirm their password?

Add a ’splash page’ type thing… “This page contains material of a very permanent nature - are you sure you want to continue? (yes/no)”
