Five Kiwi Films You Should See (That Are Not Made By Peter Jackson)

For those of you who may not know it, I work in a video store. So I get to see a lot of movies come and go, get to see a lot of movies, and get to talk to people who see a lot of movies. While it occured to me that, following on from my Five Reasons Why I Won’t RP With You post, the idea for Five Mysteries Of The Universe would start a category called Five Things.

So, anyway, here’s my second Five Things…. Five Kiwi Films You Should See (That Are Not Made By Peter Jackson). We have a comedy, a drama, a tragedy, a thriller/comedy, and a truly Kiwi take on the zombie genre (more so than Peter Jackson’s Brain Dead - a zom rom com long before Shaun of the Dead).

So, enjoy!

Goodbye Pork Pie

Local goon, Gerry, hires a yellow mini in Kaitaia using a stolen license. John’s wife has just left him and moved to Invercargill. He is devastated and needs to talk to her. He has no transport and needs a ride. Together with the little mini that Gerry names “Pork Pie”, they hit the road to travel the length of the country. Their high speed exploits earn them the name “the Blondini gang”. The police, however take a dim view of this and make it their mission in life to stop the Blondini boys from reaching their destination.

Out Of The Blue

Based on the Aramoana Massacre that occurred on 13 November and 14 November 1990. Resident David Gray, an unemployed gun collector, went on a rampage in which 13 people were shot dead, before Gray himself was shot by police.

Once Were Warriors

Set in urban Auckland (New Zealand) this movie tells the story of the Heke family. Jake Heke is a violent man who beats his wife frequently when drunk, and yet obviously loves both her and his family. The movie follows a period of several weeks in the family’s life showing Jake’s frequent outburst of violence and the effect that this has on his family. The youngest son is in trouble with the police and may be put into a foster home while the elder son is about to join a street gang, while Jake’s daughter has her own serious problems.

Scarfies

Five Otago University students (’Scarfies’) decide to squat in an empty house. They discover a locked room that holds a hidden treasure - a large quantity of marijuana. What happens when the cash-strapped students decide to become amateur druglords for the week? And what exactly should they do about the owner of the crop?

Black Sheep

An experiment in genetic engineering turns harmless sheep into blood-thirsty killers that terrorize a sprawling New Zealand farm.
